Now that our children's school year is ending, it's time for our homework assignment: Writing letters of thanks to their teachers.

Was your child fortunate enough to have an extraordinary teacher? Someone who lit the curiosity fire, opened a new world and sent your child hurtling happily into it?

That deserves more than a contribution to the class gift. If a teacher has made a difference in your child's life, say so.

I wrote such letters this year with a sense of finality. My younger daughter has finished high school. The school-age part of life -- my children's and my own -- is over.
