The single most important thing a city can do is provide a community where interesting, smart people want to live with their families.
If we are to learn to improve the quality of the decisions we make, we need to accept the mysterious nature of our snap judgments.

There can be as much value in the blink of an eye as in months of rational analysis.

Instinct is the gift of experience. The first question you have to ask yourself is, 'On what basis am I making a judgment?' If you have no experience then your instincts aren't any good.

People are experience-rich and theory-poor. People who are busy doing things – as opposed to people who are busy sitting around, like me, reading and having coffee in coffee shops – don't have opportunities to kind of collect and organise their experiences and make sense of them.

What do we tell our children? Haste makes waste. Look before you leap. Stop and think. Don't judge a book by its cover. We believe that we are always better off gathering as much information as possible and spending as much time as possible in deliberation.

Now that our children's school year is ending, it's time for our homework assignment: Writing letters of thanks to their teachers.

Was your child fortunate enough to have an extraordinary teacher? Someone who lit the curiosity fire, opened a new world and sent your child hurtling happily into it?

That deserves more than a contribution to the class gift. If a teacher has made a difference in your child's life, say so.

I wrote such letters this year with a sense of finality. My younger daughter has finished high school. The school-age part of life -- my children's and my own -- is over.

TOUGH TIMES

By JIM MEENAN

A few weeks back I attended a forum in Elkhart to discuss and identify trends that could be used to build a foundation for the future.

It wasn't quite what I thought it would be about but futurist Dave Zach's 90-minute presentation at The Matterhorn Restaurant in Elkhart certainly got people thinking.

With a presentation combining common sense with eye-opening thoughts, it certainly appeared the audience of about 100 or so professionals left feeling the talk was valuable.
